Complete Streets

Dear Community Member:

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has just released the subsequent chapters of their statewide complete streets policy. Public comment for Chapters 5-9 will be open through an online survey. You can find a link to the survey here (there is also a link at the top of this page) and comments are due by February 21, 2012. While the document is a much needed start and does a good job of addressing the key issues, we have some concerns in regard to how it will meet the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists, in particular our most vulnerable citizens who have few transportation choices.

You may review the full policy at http://www.nccompletestreets.org/. Given it is a lengthy and technical document, the PHC team is working to provide a summary and list of key concerns. This summary will be available very soon to help you in submitting your comments.

We strongly encourage you to complete the survey and share this information with others who support healthy active communities.  Should you wish to share this information with someone else, you may find links to the policy, the survey as well as download the PHC summary document on the blog.

In the future we hope to count on you to help us with an occasional email, phone call or letter to indicate your support of complete streets and active communities?  If you would like to continue to be updated and engaged in these issues, please register for the PHC newsletter here.

Thank you for your support of healthy active communities!

Sincerely,

Pioneering Healthier Communities

Complete Streets

Dear Community Member:

Pioneering Healthier Communities is an organization of community leaders working to address healthy active lifestyles in Buncombe and McDowell Counties.  One of our key focuses is helping to create a community where we can safely and easily walk, bike or take the bus on a regular basis.  We hope you can join us in this effort!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other health leaders strongly recommend that state and local governments take steps to make it easier for individuals to use active transportation. Policies that guide communities in making their street infrastructure work for all transportation forms are known as complete streets policies.   NC Department of Transportation (DOT), the French Broad Metropolitan Organization and local governments are crafting and preparing for adoption and implementation of complete streets policies.

NC DOT has just released a draft of Chapters 1-4 of their statewide complete streets policy and is asking for comments through an online survey that can be found here (there is also a link at the top of this page) and comments are due by August 17, 2011.  While the document is a much needed start and does a good job of addressing the key issues, we have some concerns in regard to how it will meet the needs pedestrians and bicyclists, in particular our most vulnerable citizens who have few transportation choices.

You may review the policy at http://www.nccompletestreets.org/.   Given it is a lengthy and technical document, we have provided you with a summary and a list of key concerns from the PHC Advisory Committee, found at the top of this page.  The summary is organized in a manner consistent with the survey layout to enable you to more easily respond to the survey in a timely manner.
